Delete your account

This page explains how to delete your Cite account and what happens to your information when you do. You can delete your account yourself inside the app, and you can ask us to delete it by email if you no longer have the app installed. You do not need to reinstall Cite to make the request. If you would rather keep your account and only remove some of what you have posted, see deleting your data without deleting your account.

1. Deleting your account in the app

If you still have Cite installed, this is the fastest route and it takes effect immediately.

1. Open Cite and sign in to the account you want to delete.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account.
4. Read the confirmation, then tap Delete everything.

Deletion runs straight away and cannot be undone. There is no waiting period and no way to recover the account afterwards, so please make sure you have what you need before you confirm.

2. If you have already uninstalled Cite

Email cite@joincite.com from the address on your Cite account, with “Delete my account” as the subject. Please include:

• the email address you signed up with, and
• your Cite username, if you remember it.

We may need to verify that the account is yours before we act on the request. We aim to complete verified requests within 30 days.

3. What is deleted

Deleting your account removes your login and the records tied to it. Specifically, we delete:

• Your account and sign-in credentials, including your authentication record, so the account can no longer be logged into.
• Your profile: name, username, email address, avatar and other profile details.
• Pins you created.
• Events you created, and your attendance records for events run by other people.
• Reports you submitted, and the messages you sent in report chats.
• Area alerts you posted, and the messages you sent in area alert chats.
• Posts and reactions you left in event feeds.
• Reviews you wrote, and your votes on whether someone else's review was helpful.
• Messages you sent in event chats.
• Pin verifications you contributed.
• Saved items you bookmarked.
• Groups you own, and your membership of groups owned by other people.
• Records of which messages you had read.
• Your last reported location.

4. What is kept, and for how long

A small number of records are not removed by account deletion:

• Moderation records. Content that has been reported and hidden is retained rather than deleted, so that a wrongly hidden item can be restored and a deliberately false one can be acted on.
• Photographs you uploaded. The image files themselves remain in storage after the posts that displayed them are deleted. They are no longer shown anywhere in the app, but the web address of an uploaded photograph is not secret, so anybody who already has that address can still open it. If you want your uploaded images removed from storage, ask us by email and we will delete them.
• Records of notifications sent to you, kept briefly so the same notification is not sent twice, and deleted after 30 days.
• Limited account information, where we need to keep it for security, backup or legal reasons. Backups are overwritten on their normal cycle.
• Aggregated or de-identified information that can no longer be linked back to you.

Anything you shared outside Cite is outside our control. The app can produce a shareable message for pins, events, reports and alerts; once you have sent one, deleting your account does not retract it.

5. Deleting your data without deleting your account

You do not have to close your account to remove what you have posted. You can do most of it yourself in the app, and you can ask us for the rest.

In the app

Open the item you want to remove and use its delete option. This works for:

• pins, events, reports and area alerts you created;
• reviews you wrote;
• messages you sent in event, report and area alert chats;
• posts and reactions you left in event feeds;
• saved items, and your RSVP to an event.

You can also edit or clear your profile details under Settings, stop sharing your location at any time in your device settings, and switch off notification categories individually under Settings.

By email

For anything you cannot remove yourself (uploaded image files, or a specific record you want erased), email cite@joincite.com from the address on your account with “Delete my data” as the subject, and say what you want removed. Your account stays open and you can keep using Cite. We may need to verify that the account is yours, and we aim to complete verified requests within 30 days.

If you are named in an alert posted by somebody else, you can ask us to take it down at any time and you do not need an account to do so. Any user can also report an alert from within the app, which can hide it from everyone pending review.
